The General Rule
Traditional foil highlights typically need a touch-up every 6–10 weeks, depending on how visible your regrowth is and how precise the look you're maintaining. Full highlights, where most of your hair is lifted, will show regrowth faster than partial highlights concentrated around the face.
Factors That Extend the Time Between Appointments
A softer highlight placement, with more of your natural base visible, can extend your maintenance to 10–14 weeks. A balayage or "lived-in" color technique applied through highlights softens the grow-out even further. Factors That Shorten the Time Between Appointments
Very high contrast highlights, dramatically lighter than your base, will show regrowth faster. A precise placement close to the roots requires more frequent touch-ups. Darker natural hair with bright highlights will show new growth more visibly.
Balancing Cost and Result
If you love bright, high-contrast highlights but want to reduce appointment frequency, talk to your colorist about a hybrid approach: foil highlights for face-framing brightness with a balayage technique through the back and lengths. This gives you the brightness where it's most visible with a softer grow-out through the rest.
What Happens If You Wait Too Long
Hair doesn't "break" if you go beyond your optimal maintenance window, but the look will lose its precision. Very grown-out highlights can look unintentional. A full root-to-ends refresh may be needed if the grow-out is substantial, which takes more time and product than a standard touch-up.
