Many people wait until their split ends are visible from across a room before booking a haircut. But by then, the damage has already worked its way up the shaft and requires a more significant cut to remove. Here are seven signs it's time to book your next appointment, even if your hair looks "fine."
1. Your Ends Feel Rough or Dry
Healthy ends should feel smooth and soft. If the ends of your hair feel rough, porous, or dry compared to the mid-lengths, the cuticle is damaged. No amount of conditioner will fix a split end. Only cutting it will remove the damaged portion and prevent further splitting up the shaft.
2. Your Style Won't Hold
When hair stops holding its style, whether that's a blowout, a curl, or even just air-dried waves, it's often a sign that the ends are damaged and weighing down the shape. A fresh cut removes the dead weight and restores movement.
3. You're Seeing Tangles in the Same Spots
Hair that tangles repeatedly in the same area, usually the ends or where a ponytail elastic sits, has cuticle damage in those areas. The rough, open cuticle catches on surrounding strands. A trim removes the damaged portion and stops the tangling cycle.
4. Your Hair Has Lost Its Shape
Every haircut has a specific shape, whether that's a bob, layers, or a blunt cut. As hair grows, the shape loses its integrity and starts looking shapeless or heavy at the bottom. If you're pulling your hair back more than usual because it "doesn't look right," your shape has grown out.
5. Your Color Looks Faded at the Ends
Damaged ends have an open cuticle that releases pigment faster than healthy hair. If your color looks patchy or faded primarily at the ends, a trim will remove the high-porosity sections and restore color evenness, and your next color service will last longer.
6. It's Been More Than 3 Months
Even if you're growing your hair out, a light trim every 10–12 weeks removes split ends before they travel up the shaft. Skipping trims in the name of length often costs more length in the end. Once a split end travels far enough, you need a more significant cut to remove all the damage.
7. Your Hair Feels Heavy
Hair that feels heavy, sits flat, or pulls away from volume is hair that has grown past its shape. Removing bulk from the ends and through the mid-lengths instantly restores movement and volume.
